Information for New Members

Welcome to the Sussex Record Society. The Society is a registered charity, founded in 1901 with the aim of increasing the accessibility of the historical records of the county of Sussex by publishing original records found in national and local archive repositories, as well as privately owned sources. So far the Society has published 91 volumes covering topics from the eleventh to the twentieth centuries.

The Society is proud of its achievements in preserving and making accessible the county’s rich heritage of historical documents. By joining the Society you will be playing your part in keeping up this vital work. Members benefit by receiving the published volumes as they become available. If you decide you do not want the latest volume, please let the Honorary Secretary know, so that the volume can be added to the stock for retail sales.

You will find enclosed copies of the Society’s constitution, annual report, annual accounts, a banker’s order form and list of available publications. The first three will give you an idea about the Society’s activities and finances. As far as the form is concerned, it would be a great help to the Honorary Treasurer if you are willing to arrange a banker’s order for your subscription.

The Society’s registered office is at Barbican House and letters should be sent to that address. The Assistant Secretary, Ian Hilder, can be contacted at Barbican House or by e-mail to [email protected] Ian can respond directly to some enquiries – particularly any dealing with publications and membership – and will pass on the rest to the Honorary Secretary or the Honorary Treasurer, Will Pilfold, as appropriate. The other financial benefit is that members can buy in-print volumes at special reduced rates, normally two- thirds of the retail price. The Society also maintains a small stock of second-hand volumes which members can buy at a reduced rate. A list of both new and second-hand items is held by the Assistant Secretary.

The Society’s main communication with members is through the papers sent out for the Annual General Meeting each spring. A short newsletter/progress report is sent out around the New Year. As a publishing society there is no programme of social activities for members, but the AGM is normally held at a place of historical interest, the meeting being preceded by lunch and followed by a lecture and/or tour.

The Society has a website at This has full details of the Society’s publications, with an option to order titles which are currently available. The site also has some important databases and research tools. Some of the Society’s published volumes are also available on-line.

The Society maintains a computer record of members and their contact details. Access is restricted to those officers of the Society who require it for administrative purposes.

Finally, the society is always considering topics for future volumes. If you have any experience in reading old documents and would like to publish a source relating to Sussex history, or if you know of a source that you think might merit a publication, please do raise it with a member of the council.
