review by H. J. G. [H. J. Glover] in Sussex Notes and Queries, August 1940:
This twenty-page booklet gives the latest, and probably, but for some lucky find, the final word on this subject. Though intended for the expert and the collector, many Sussex people will find much to interest them, not only in the introductory remarks, but also in the list of corrections and additions, which include many bits of local history.
Though Bramber has to lose its one token to Ellesmere, Salop, Eastbourne only has to pass one to Westbourne at the other end of the county and may even be able to regain William Birridge's halfpenny from Bourne (Lincs). Westham, juxta Pevensey and not West Ham in Essex, is now definitely the home of Edward Edwards's token. The spelling of our Westham as two words is really not strong evidence for Essex, as it occurs so in the Parish Register and other documents. Locally it is always pronounced as two words, and probably always has been and (may we hope?) always will be. Spelling, says Mr. Caldecott, was not a strong point with Sussex tradesmen in the 17th century. The Parish Registers show that the clergy had the same weakness.
Mr. Caldecott gives a list of the occupations of the issuers of tokens and ingeniously explains the rarity of butchers and bakers. He also deduces the relative importance of the towns at this time by the numbers of tokens issued, Chichester heading the list with 37. The county has the distinction of possessing the only token bearing the arms of the Needle makers Company, "representing an industry formerly a staple one at Chichester."
Sussex was, characteristically, slow in adopting the token habit. It needed the persuasion of the travellers of the London die-sinkers to induce the tradespeople to adopt the practice.
The Brighton Museum has the most complete public collection of Sussex tokens, excelling even the British Museum, though the latter is rich in the rarer specimens.

Abstract:
Early in November 1961 a farmer and his son were engaged in deep ploughing one of the fields at Bullock Down Farm (O.S. 577962) at Beachy Head near eastbourne in Sussex, when they noticed a scatter of perhaps a hundred copper coins. These they carefully gathered up, and, after a vist to the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, they were encouraged to return to the spot where they recovered over the next few days a grand total of 5,146 coins.

Abstract:
The number of Sussex tokens in comparison with the rest of the country may be small but, nevertheless, they form an illuminating commentary on the life of its people. Tokens were the people's answer to the pressing need for small change - a want neglected by the authorities over prolonged periods.
The earliest known Sussex token of 1650 is from Rye having the sign of the Mermaid. Nearly 200 other tokens of the 17th century are recorded giving names of the issuers, their place of origin and some indication of the trade or profession they followed. This forms an invaluable directory of the calling of the principal inhabitants and of prime interest in the study of local history.

Abstract:
On 11 February, while searching with a metal detector for stray coins on Bullock Down Farm at Beachy Head near Eastbourne in Sussex (O.S. 577962), Mr D. J. Aldred discovered a hoard of 5540 argentiferous bronze Roman imperila antoniniani, contained in a bronze bucket, within a few yards of the find-spots of the 1961 and 1964 hoards. The coins were subsequently declared a Treasure Trove at a coroner's inquest, and the finders were named as Mr Aldred and Mr E. D. Williams of Bullock Down Farm.

Abstract:
At the end of a recent die-study of the gold coins of Cunobelin, it was suggested that there might be something to learn from a comparable die-study of the gold coinage of Cunobelin's contemporary, Verica. The index of pre-Roman coins kept by the Institute of Archaeology in Oxford now makes such a task feasible without excessive labour. Thanks are again due to Mr Robert Wilkins of the Institute, for arranging and executing the tedious photography involved.

The Independent Historical Research Group (IHRG) started from small beginnings when four close friends expressed an interest in examining the known Romano-British iron industry site at Bardown, near Ticehurst in East Sussex. A metal detecting find in 2006 of a rare medallion of Antoninus Pius, which the British Museum thought could have been presented to "someone of importance", posed questions over the significance of the site. This developed into a project which proved to be an adventure in the study of the landscape over an area of six square miles with discovery following discovery, attracting the interest of both local people and those from further afield.
